Joining an online meeting only to find out your microphone is dead is a common frustration. Before you rush to buy a new headset, the issue is usually a muted setting or a denied privacy permission in Windows. Here is how to quickly get your audio back.
How to Fix It:
Check Physical Connections: Ensure the microphone or headset is securely plugged into the correct audio jack (usually the pink port) or a working USB port. If it has a physical mute button on the wire, make sure it is not toggled on.
Check Privacy Settings: Press the Windows Key + I to open Settings. Go to Privacy & security (Windows 11) or Privacy (Windows 10). Select Microphone. Ensure that "Microphone access" is turned On, and that the specific app you are using is allowed to access it.
Set as Default Device: Right-click the speaker icon in your system tray (bottom right corner) and select Sound settings. Under the "Input" section, make sure your actual microphone is selected from the drop-down menu. Speak into the mic and check if the volume meter moves.
If the meter moves, your microphone is working perfectly on the system level!
