Windows updates are crucial for security, but the system's habit of automatically restarting your PC to install them can interrupt your workflow and cause unsaved data loss. Fortunately, you can take control and tell Windows exactly when it is allowed to reboot.
How to Fix It:
Open Windows Update: Press the Windows Key + I to open Settings, then click on Windows Update in the left sidebar (Windows 11) or main menu (Windows 10).
Set Active Hours: Look for the Advanced options section and click on it. Find the setting called Active hours.
Adjust the Schedule: Change the setting from "Automatically" to Manually. Now, set your typical working hours (for example, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM). Windows will never automatically restart your computer during this timeframe.
Pause Updates (Optional): If you are in the middle of a critical project and want zero interruptions, go back to the main Windows Update page and click Pause for 1 week. You can click this multiple times to extend the pause period.
