How to Use Tabs in File Explorer in Windows 11 (Like a Web Browser)

Windows 11 finally brings a long‑awaited feature: tabs in File Explorer. Just like in Chrome, Edge, or any modern browser, you can now open multiple folders in a single window — keeping your desktop clean and making file management much faster.

This guide shows you how to use tabs efficiently and work like a pro.

Step 1: Open File Explorer

This opens the main file management interface in Windows.

1. Press Windows + E on your keyboard.

2. File Explorer will open instantly.

Step 2: Open a New Tab

Tabs let you open multiple folders in one window.

1. Click the plus (+) button at the top of File Explorer.

2. A new tab will appear next to your current one.

3. Pro Tip: Press Ctrl + T to open a new tab instantly.

Step 3: Switch Between Tabs

Tabs work exactly like browser tabs.

1. Click any tab at the top to switch to it.

Important Note

Tabs are available only in Windows 11 22H2 and later. Older builds of Windows 11 do not include this feature.
