How to Hide "Recommended" Files in the Windows 11 Start Menu

Every time you open the Windows 11 Start menu, it displays a "Recommended" section showing your recently opened files, photos, and newly installed apps. If you share your PC or frequently share your screen during video calls, this can be a major privacy concern. This guide will show you how to completely hide your personal history and make your Start menu cleaner.

WHY THIS MATTERS

You may need to perform this action when:

  • You want to keep your recent activity (like sensitive documents or personal photos) private.

  • You prefer a clean, minimalist Start menu without visual clutter.

  • You want to stop Windows from suggesting apps you don't need.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

  • A computer running Windows 11

  • 1 minute of time

STEP 1 — Open Start Menu Settings

Actions: Press the Windows Key + I on your keyboard to open the Settings app. On the left sidebar, click on Personalization, and then select the Start option on the right side.

STEP 2 — Turn Off Recommended Files

Actions: In the Start settings menu, look for the toggle switch labeled Show recommended files in Start, recent files in File Explorer, and items in Jump Lists. Click the switch to turn it Off. This immediately hides your personal documents from the Start menu.

STEP 3 — Turn Off Recently Added Apps

Actions: To make the Start menu even cleaner and maximize your privacy, look at the toggle right above it labeled Show recently added apps. Turn this switch to Off as well. Now your Start menu will no longer show newly installed programs automatically.

ALTERNATIVE METHOD

You can quickly access these exact settings without opening the main Settings app first:

  1. Open the Start menu.

  2. Right-click anywhere on the empty space inside the menu (not on an icon).

  3. Select Start settings from the small pop-up menu.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Thinking this deletes your files — Don't worry! Turning off this feature does not delete any of your documents or photos. It simply hides the shortcut links from the Start menu. Your files are still safe in their original folders.

PRO TIP

If you ever need to find a recently opened file quickly but want to keep the Start menu clean, simply use the Windows Key + E shortcut to open File Explorer. Your recent files will still be safely listed there under "Recent" or "Quick access".

RESULT

After completing all steps, you will achieve: A private, clean Windows 11 Start menu that does not display your recent documents or newly installed apps.
