Is your PC suddenly crawling, and Task Manager shows your disk usage at 100% even when you are not actively doing anything? This common Windows issue can completely freeze your system. Here is how to identify the background processes causing the bottleneck and fix it quickly.
How to Fix It:
Restart the Windows Search Service: Press Windows Key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Scroll down the list to find Windows Search. Right-click it and select Restart (or Stop if you want to test it). This service sometimes gets stuck in an endless indexing loop.
Disable the SysMain Service: In the same Services window, look for a service named SysMain (known as Superfetch in older Windows versions). Right-click it and select Properties. Change the "Startup type" to Disabled, then click the Stop button under Service status. Click OK. This feature tries to pre-load apps to make them open faster, but it frequently overloads hard drives.
Check for Stuck Antivirus Scans: Sometimes, background malware scans (even from Windows Defender) get stuck. Open your antivirus software to see if a full scan is running, or temporarily pause real-time protection to see if the disk usage drops instantly.
After applying these changes, restart your computer to give your drive a fresh start!
