When you press the Windows key and start typing, you expect instant results. But sometimes, Windows Search just goes blank or stops responding entirely. Here is how to quickly fix a broken search function and get your indexing back on track.
How to Fix It:
Restart Windows Explorer: Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Make sure you are on the "Processes" tab. Scroll down to find Windows Explorer. Right-click on it and select Restart. Your taskbar will disappear for a second and come back. Test the search now.
Run the Search Troubleshooter: Press Windows Key + I to open Settings. Go to Update & Security (Windows 10) or System (Windows 11), then navigate to Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find Search and Indexing and click Run. Follow the on-screen prompts to let Windows fix the issue automatically.
Rebuild the Search Index: If search is still broken, the index database might be corrupted. Press Windows Key + R, type control, and press Enter to open Control Panel. Change the view to "Large icons" and click Indexing Options. Click the Advanced button, and under the Troubleshooting section, click Rebuild. This process can take some time, so let it run in the background.
A quick reboot after these steps usually ensures everything works perfectly!
